FDA Warns Against Dangerous Effects of Testosterone (Low T) Drugs
FDA Issues Warning About Low T Drugs
Testosterone therapy treatment for men with low testosterone, or Low T, is prescribed for over two million patients in the United States every year. Although only approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of the serious medical condition hypogonadism, these drugs have increasingly been prescribed as a cure for the natural conditions of aging, such as a reduced sex drive and loss of muscle mass.
On March 3, 2015, the FDA released a Safety Announcement cautioning doctors that the benefits and safety of testosterone treatment to combat aging have not been established. The FDA also warned of a possible increased cardiovascular risk associated with testosterone use, including an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. Moving forward, drugmakers will be required to include information about these risks on their warning labels and conduct clinical trials to further study the issue.
The FDA recommends that patients undergoing testosterone treatment seek immediate medical attention if they are suffering from any of the following symptoms:
Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
Weakness in one part or one side of the body
